Mosquito Spraying

PSA:  CITY OF SPRINGFIELD

MOSQUITO SPRAYING

The City of Springfield will once again be conducting a truck-mounted, ultra-low volume (ULV) mosquito control operation in Springfield to help control adult mosquitoes.  Initially we will be focusing on Main Street, Railroad Street, and 2nd Street, as well as the MoPac Trail, Buffalo Park, Springfield City Park, and Springfield Creek Trails & Recreation Park.  The control work will begin June 4, 2025.  The spraying will begin no earlier than 9:00 p.m.  The City will monitor the situation and may make additional applications if warranted.  Although specific dates cannot be determined at this time as weather conditions could factor into the application, the spraying will begin no earlier than 9:00 p.m., if needed.

The insecticide we will use has rapid environmental breakdown and is effective on adult mosquitoes; it will not target mosquito eggs.  NOTE:  The insecticide does not keep mosquitoes away or repel them from an area.  Adult mosquitoes may migrate into an area after spraying and it could appear that the spraying was ineffective. The insecticide will only last a short period of time and then will quickly biodegrade into harmless byproducts.

Although the spray only targets adult mosquitoes, you can also help control the mosquito population by eliminating the standing water where mosquitoes lay their eggs.  Refill birdbaths every two days; clean out gutters and install screening on top to prevent debris from collecting and holding water; check kids’ playsets and toys, garden décor, outdoor debris or any other place that holds standing water and drain it.  For garden ponds or any other water source you cannot drain, add a pump or fountain to keep the water surface moving, which reduces the chances of adult mosquitoes laying eggs.
